What Is Numerology?
Numerology is the traditional study of numbers drawn from a person’s name and date of birth, and of the meanings attached to them. The arithmetic is simple: letters and dates are added up and reduced to a single digit from 1 to 9, and each digit carries a set of traditional meanings. Indian numerology, or ank jyotish, also links each number to a planet, which is why you will see the Sun behind 1, the Moon behind 2 and Saturn behind 8. None of it is complicated once the steps are visible, which is exactly why our calculators print every step instead of only the answer.
The three numbers Indian numerology starts with
Most readings in India begin with the same three numbers. If you are new to the subject, start here:
| Number | Comes from | Traditionally read as | Tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mulank (root or psychic number) | The day of the month you were born | Your everyday nature and instincts | Mulank Calculator |
| Bhagyank (also called the Life Path) | Your full date of birth | The direction and lessons of your life | Life Path Calculator |
| Namank (name number) | The letters of your name | How you come across to others | Name Numerology |
A small detail worth knowing: your Bhagyank and your Life Path number are the same thing under two names, one Indian and one Western. Some sites treat them as different numbers, which is where a lot of confusion online begins.
The core numbers Western numerology adds
Western numerology builds a chart from four main numbers: the Life Path from your date of birth, the Expression or Destiny number from all the letters of your name, the Soul Urge from the vowels and the Personality number from the consonants. Around them sit timing numbers, such as the Personal Year and Personal Month, and a set of deeper numbers, including the Pinnacles, Challenges, Karmic Debt, Karmic Lesson, Balance and Maturity numbers. The Lo Shu grid, which many Indian numerologists also use, comes from a different tradition altogether, the Chinese magic square, and maps which digits appear in your date of birth and which are missing.
Chaldean or Pythagorean: which chart we use
Name numerology has two letter charts, and they give different answers. The Chaldean chart uses values 1 to 8 and was popularised in English by the writer Cheiro in the early twentieth century; it is the one most Indian numerologists prefer, and it is the chart behind our name-total tools. The Pythagorean chart numbers the letters 1 to 9 in alphabetical order; although it carries the name of the Greek philosopher, the system as used today was assembled in the United States in the early twentieth century, chiefly by L. Dow Balliett and later Dr. Juno Jordan. When we ran both charts over 1,500 common Indian names, the two agreed on the same single-digit result only about 10 percent of the time, which is why our Name Numerology Calculator shows you both side by side instead of picking one and staying quiet about it.
What Is Vastu Shastra?
Vastu Shastra is India’s traditional body of knowledge about buildings: how a house is laid out, which room faces which way, and how light, air and space are arranged. Its ideas come from Sanskrit texts such as the Mayamata and the Manasara, and from the Vastu Purusha Mandala, a square grid laid over a site, usually of 64 or 81 squares, with the head of the figure in the north-east. The classical texts work with eight directions and their guardian deities, from Kubera in the north to Vayu in the north-west.
Modern practice often uses a finer map of sixteen zones of 22.5 degrees each, best known from MahaVastu, a contemporary method that adapts the classical zones for today’s flats and offices. Our Vastu tools use this 16-zone map, so a north-east reading means the slice from 33.75 to 56.25 degrees on your compass, not a vague corner. Each zone is linked to an element and an area of life: money in the north, clarity in the north-east, cash flow in the south-east, relationships in the south-west, gains in the west.
What our Vastu tools check
- Direction and score: your home’s facing, its zones, and a checklist score across ten key placements.
- Rooms: the kitchen with its stove and cooking direction, the bedroom with its sleeping direction, the pooja room, and the toilet with its seat direction.
- Entrance: the main door direction and where it falls among the 32 entrance positions of 11.25 degrees each.
- Property: plot shape, slope and roads, office seating and cash placement, and the Aaya measurement check used before construction.
How to Use This Site
- Start with your core numbers. Run the Full Numerology Report or the Life Path Calculator once, and note the numbers it gives you. If you want only one quick answer, the Lucky Number Calculator is the fastest place to begin.
- Check your name. The Name Numerology Calculator gives your Namank in both letter systems, so you can see how much the choice of chart matters.
- Look at timing. The Personal Year and Personal Month tools describe the theme of a year or month and show where you are in the nine-year cycle.
- Then your home. Take a compass reading, run the Vastu Direction Calculator, get a Vastu Score, and use the room tools for anything you want to look at closely.
Everything is free, nothing needs an account, and every tool works on a phone. If you want to understand a subject rather than only get a number, each tool page carries a full explanation underneath it.
How Our Calculators Are Built
- The working is always shown. Every tool prints the arithmetic, letter by letter and digit by digit, so you can check the result by hand or against another site.
- The system is named. Each page says which letter chart or which Vastu map it uses, because a name can give one number in Chaldean and another in Pythagorean, and a room can sit in different zones under different systems.
- Disagreements are stated, not hidden. Numerologists differ on whether a personal year begins on 1 January or on your birthday, on whether master numbers 11 and 22 should be kept, and on the best zone for a toilet. Where schools differ, the page says so.
- No fear and no selling. We do not tell anyone to change a name, buy a gemstone, cancel a wedding date or break a wall. There is nothing to buy here.
- Your details stay with you. The calculators run entirely in your browser. The name and date you type are not sent to our server and are not stored by us. How the site itself uses cookies and analytics is set out in our Privacy Policy.
- Written and checked by a person. The tools and the articles are written and reviewed by Ank Shastra, and corrections are welcome through the contact page. When a reader points out an error, the page is fixed.
Is Numerology or Vastu Scientifically Proven?
No, and we would rather say that plainly than sell you certainty. Numerology and Vastu are traditional belief systems. There is no scientific evidence that a name total predicts a career, that a birth date decides a marriage, or that a door in one zone rather than another changes a family’s fortune, and rationalist critics have long described modern Vastu consultancy as pseudoscience. Parts of Vastu do overlap with sensible design, since light from the east, cross-ventilation, an open centre and a tidy entrance make any home better to live in.
So use these tools the way people have always used such traditions: as a mirror, a conversation starter and a bit of structure for thinking about yourself, your relationships and your home. Keep decisions about health, money, marriage and property where they belong, with facts, professional advice and your own judgement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are these numerology and Vastu calculators free?
Yes. Every calculator on this site is free, with no sign-up, no login and nothing to pay. There is no paid report or consultation behind them.
Which calculator should I start with?
Start with the Full Numerology Report or the Life Path Number calculator for an overview of your core numbers. After that, the Name Numerology and Lucky Number tools are the most useful next steps, and the Vastu Direction Calculator is the place to begin for your home.
What is the difference between Mulank, Bhagyank and Namank?
Mulank comes from the day of the month you were born and is read as your everyday nature. Bhagyank comes from your full date of birth and is the same number the West calls the Life Path. Namank comes from the letters of your name. Each has its own calculator on this site.
Do you use the Chaldean or the Pythagorean system?
Both, and each page says which one it is using. Our name-total tools follow the Chaldean chart, which is the one most Indian numerologists use, while the Pythagorean Numerology Calculator uses the Western chart. The Name Numerology Calculator shows both together, because the same name often gives two different numbers.
Which name should I enter, my full name or my nickname?
Most Western numerologists use the full name on your birth certificate, while many Indian practitioners prefer the name you actually use every day. Both are reasonable. Try each one and see which reading you recognise; the calculators take a second to run.
Do I need my exact birth time?
No. Numerology uses your name and date of birth only, so birth time is not needed. Vastu needs a compass reading of your home, not a birth time either.
Can I check numerology or Vastu for someone else?
Yes. Enter any name and date of birth, such as a partner’s, a child’s or a business name, and run the Vastu tools for any home, flat, plot or office you are considering, not only your own.
How do I find the directions in my home for the Vastu tools?
Stand near the centre of your home, hold a compass or a calibrated phone compass flat, keep it away from steel furniture, appliances and wiring, and note where north is. In India the difference between compass north and true north is only about a degree or two, far smaller than a 22.5 degree zone, so no correction is needed.
Is my data saved when I use a calculator?
No. The calculators run in your browser, so the name and date you type never reach our server and are not stored by us. Our Privacy Policy explains how the website itself uses cookies and analytics.
Is numerology or Vastu scientifically proven?
No. Both are traditional belief systems rather than proven science. Many people enjoy them as a way to reflect on their lives and homes, and that is how these tools are offered here, for guidance and self-reflection rather than as predictions.
The calculators and content on this site are based on traditional numerology and Vastu principles and are intended for general guidance, entertainment and self-reflection, not as a substitute for professional advice. Read our full Disclaimer.
